Must-Read: How To Start A Blog!

Know Your Niche (KYN)
What is your blog or biz about? Health? Fitness? Relationship? Personal finance? Name them!

Knowing your niche will help you to in choosing a perfect name, as the name should describe the actual topic you're blogging about!

So when you've known your niche, you can hence start crafting out some names from that niche!

It is exceptional for personal blogs, if you're using your name to start a blog or online business, it won't or may not have to tally with your topic.

Most people are confused whether or whether not if they should use  their personal name or look for a suitable name! But the best advise I can give is you shouldn't use your personal name when starting out new! Why?

Top blogger like Neil Patel has a blog with his personal name (neilpatel.com) but started out with big establishment  (like kissmetrics and crazy egg) where he got some level of fame. I advise you choose a name for your blog and later on if you wish you can create another for your personal stuff! That's what the top folks are doing!

It also isn't wrong to start with your personal name though I'm not a fan of it neither will I tell you to do so, but I have seen bloggers do so and it's also great. Natalie Bacon started with her personal name (she actually change her blog's name a personal name) and it isn't a big deal!

What matters is sticking to your niche and publishing helpful stuff...

If it isn't a personal blog don't use your name, if you intend to hire workers, or turn it to a team or brand then you should have a name aside being personal. After you've gotten some level of fame you can then start a new and personal blog! Whichever way remember that Content is king and also stick with your niche, it's easy to go beyond your niche to extra niche when you're with a personal name! (It you're having plight deciding if you should go personal or not, feel free to contact me!)

Lets say your niche is fitness, you can start crafting out names from that niche, though it requires some creativity. I can hence try fitnesstips, fitnessguide, fitnesslovers, myfitnesslife and more! It mustn't have the keyword 'fitness' (or your main keyword but I recommend it do for SEO purpose!).

Namemesh is a great tool to get suggestions, Go to Namemesh and type in your keywords (for example Fitness) and see the suggestions. If you find any useful then feel free to use them!

The Name Should Be Short And Mnemonic.
Whichever name you've decided should be easily remembered and also short. These helps SEO and also helps your readers remember your blog's name.

Don't use names that's too long, they're hardly remembered except they're words that make sense like "ILovePersonalFinance.com". You get the picture!

Don't Abbreviate Unnecessarily.
I have seen people making this mistake, because someone has similar name already you just to abbreviate in order to purchase domain!

Lets say you intend using relationshipsavvy.com and discovered it isn't available, you shouldn't abbreviate like relationshipsavy.com or relationshipsavvi.com or similar. Look for another name instead. Why?

If you abbreviate, you might be loosing some traffic. When someone decide to visit your blog, they might just type the real spelling (forgetting or not knowing yours is abbreviated) and would end up visiting your competitor's blog. It also affect SEO especially if your competitor has already ranked high!

Don't Plural words to get domain!
Some people still do these, when they've discovered a name isn't available, they just plural it and purchase. It shouldn't be so! It affects SEO!

Michelle's blog is makingsenseofcents.com, it wouldn't make any sense removing the S and having makingsenseofcent.com or adding some letters like makingsenseoffcents.com.

Or maybe I wanted to use businessinsider.com and it's  unavailable and decided to use businessinsiders.com. don't make such mistake!

Choose Name The That Best Describe Your Website
It's better to use a name that makes no sense (name that isn't found in any dictionary or combination of two words like LoveNancials) than to use one that isn't related to what you have to offer!

When my domain name is relationshipsavvy.com, it won't make sense to use such for a heath blog. It's even better I use name that has no dictionary meaning than using something that doesn't describe your websites niche! You get the picture!

Check Domain Name Availability
Before you conclude on a name always check if it's available for use. It's a matter of going to Namecheap.com or Godaddy.com and typing in the name to see if it's available for use. If it's not then try another!

Use .com
Most websites uses the .com extension, so I recommend it than any other. When someone types a blog address, the first extension that comes into his or her mind is .com. So use the top extension!

All extension has its function, .com (company), .org (organization), and others. So if any best describes your blog use it. Don't go far as to using newly established extensions. Stick with .com .net and .org.

If others are more suitable, you can use them! Christiana used .biz and I loved it because it was perfect for her blog. It's organizeyour.biz. You see how it make sense? It clearly describe her blog!

If yours is similar then use any extension but Make sure the extension is suitable for your blog. If I'm creating a community for bloggers, I would prefer using Bloggers.club to Bloggers.com. You get the picture!

In addition, don't use another extension because the intended extension isn't available especially if the domain has high rank already. For example I used businessinsider.net because .com isn't available. If a domain has already been purchased but not in use or there's nothing serious about what it's been used for, you may consider contacting the owner if he or she is willing to sell!

Check if domain isn't on special price
I once intended to use the domain preciousblog.com and i discovered it has a special price, it was around $1000 or above (not so sure). Yes some domains are like that, so check if yours isn't like that!

Check Social Media Availability
You may want to use your blog name on social platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and others.

So before concluding to use a name you may want to check if it's available on social platforms.

It's simple to do, just visit and type in the name and see which social network it's available and which it isn't!

I use mine on social platforms, just @LoveNancials!

Check Competition
You should research for names similar to yours, it's simple! I just type in the name on Google search engine and see the results I get. When I researched LoveNancials, there was no result for it. Meaning it's perfect!

Yours might not be so but competition shouldn't be too much (except you're an SEO pro or ready to compete)! It helps you in ranking on search engines.

Final Thoughts

If you're finding it hard to find a name for your blog, you should consider asking for suggestions. Craft out some names and ask a friend to pick which is perfect for your niche! You can post some names on social networks and ask for suggestions, or ask a particular friend or even a pro! I have seen people do so (some friends even asked me)!

After you've gotten a name, purchase its domain fast with desired extension, don't go about advertising it when you haven't purchased it! Make sure you buy it ASAP before someone else does.
